Staining of these TCDD-treated embryos with a monoclonal antibody prepared against fish CYP1A (MAb 1- 12-3) showed that CYP1A was already present and activated in these 96-h-old zebrafish and newly hatched medaka; expression was seen in multiple organs of both species. At the time of sam- pling for analysis, this staining was seen prominently in endo- thelial cells of multiple vascular structures, and in the epithe- lium of various organs including liver, gut, and kidney, (Fig. IB). CYP1A activates or inactivates many foreign compounds; indeed CYP1A and the AhR both might participate in the tox- icity of TCDD and related compounds (12).
