The lives, and, with a single exception, the health of the missionaryforce in Syria have been graciously jjreserved through the year, thoughin a few instances there are manifestations of serious overwork andneed of rest. During the year Rev. Wm. Bird has returned to his field, leaving hisfamily in this country. Jessup and family have returnedto this country on leave of absence. Rev. Dr. Eddy has been removed from Sidon to Beirut by a voteof the mission, and Rev. F. A. Wood has been transferred fromAbeih to Sidon. During the year a very interesting and profitable Missionary Con-ference was held at Beirut by Protestant Christians of various denom-inations in Syria—somewhat in keeping with the conferences whichhave been held in China and in India. The occasion served to bringout in clear relief the intelligence and worth of the native Christians,some of whom made addresses on the topics assigned of a deeply in-teresting character. It was felt that great and permanent good wasaccomplished by the meeting. Beirut Station. Regular preaching services have been maintained throughout theyear. The congregation in the church has been
