The old yellow house at the northeastcorner of Union and Bethel streets was the old residence of IsaacHowland, Jr. I can remember when the Eagle Hotel occupied thesite of the laroe brick buildino- known as Ricketson Block, on thesouthwest corner of Union and Fourth streets, and dwelling housesoccupied the lots on which are situated the Eddy and Masonic build-ings,— both fine, large brick structures having stores on the firstfloor. The Grand Opera House, on this street, was remodelled fromthe old Grace church. The interior of the Opera House is planned. SEEING THE SIGHTS. /^ and decorated after the style of the Boston Museum, and is one ofthe largest and handsomest theatres in New England. It seats overtwelve hundred persons. Purchase street is now the main business thoroughfare andhere most of the dry goods houses are located. Sixty years agothere was not a single dry goods store on Purchase street betweenUnion and Middle streets. On the east side of the street were dwell-ings, and north of these was a garden extending to William church occupied the land on which Liberty Hall is situated. In1845 William Bradford, who has since placed his name among thenoted artists of the world, conducted a dry goods store at No. Parker House, the leading hotel of the city, is situated on theeast side of this street, between Elm and Middle streets.
