Istiklal Caddesi, Istanbul under the premiership of economic reformist President Turgut Özal, post-coup development period. Elections in 1989 made him Turkey's 19th prime minister, re-elected in 1987. ANAP (Motherland Party, founder, 1983). His sudden death on 17 April 1993 remains a subject of contention. Part Kurdish he survived an assassination attempt in 1988.
