Mr. Sumner came to Michigan in1833. He was born in Delaware County, N. Y.,December KJ, 18lit, and his decease occurred .Jan-uary 13, 1879. Our subject was reared on the home farm in NewYork. He there enjoyed the advantages of a com-mon-school education, his parents giving him whatopportunities they could. They were Jacob andMargaret (Loveland) Sumner, natives of the Em-pire State. Our subjects father lived to be three-score and ten years of age and was an old school-teacher, having been engaged in the work of theschoolroom for many years. In 1829 he went toCanada and in 1833 came to Michigan and settledin Washtenaw County, where his decease occurredin September, 1852. Mr. Sumner was one of eleven children born tohis p
