Akind of scratch brigade was formed out of someof the line-of-communication troops at De Aarand Orange River, and placed under thecommnntl of Brigadier-General Fetherston-haugh. Thi> improvised brigade was numberedthe oth. The division formed of the 1st andqth Brigades was concentrated at Orange Riverbridge. It was weak in cavalry, there was nohorse artillery, and, what was more serious, ithad not enough wheeled or pack transport to. (Pluto : enable it to move more than a very few milesto right or left of the railway line. Methuenhad to depend for supplies on trains on tjierailway protected by the armoured train.
