TECHNIC OF EONTGEN RAY THEEAPY. 435 metliods, tlie quantimetric method lias the advantage of greater exact-ness and the possibility of estimating small differences of dosage. Thismethod gives a permanent registered record. The disadvantage of thismethod is the difficulty which is encountered in comparing and distin-guishing the slight differences of tint on the scale. Careful developmentis necessary and always tedious. When massive doses are given thecolor will be darker and will be more difficult for making comparisonwith the scale. The degree of the sensitiveness of the emulsion of thepaper may frequently differ. TJie Xeic Eadiometer of Freutul.—Freunds method was used in 1904,and is based on the color changes occurring in a two per cent, solution of. Fig. 221.—Kienbocks quaatimeter. pure iodoform in chloroform. This solution normally retains its colorunchanged for 48 hours, and is so very sensitive that a difference of tintmay be observed between two portions of the solution, one of which isexposed to the rays for three minutes, while the other portion is screenedfrom the action. Slight heat and light will alter the color of the solution, and, although this method is most accurate and sensitive, the solution istoo unstable for practical and clinical purposes. The iodoform (CHI3) is decomposed by the X-rays, with the libera-tion of free iodine, imparting a claret-color to the solution. Freundssolution shows a change of tint in six minutes, equal to that attained inten minutes by the use of Holzknechts pastilles. 436 ELECTEO-THEEAPEUTICS. Precipitation Test.—Schwartz,^ of Vienna, demonstrated a methodof measuring the strength of the Eontgen rays
