Anaesthetic apparatus. Shipway's Modified Kelly Intratracheal Apparatus, 1912. This apparatus was designed to deliver continuous and controllable flow of anaesthetic vapour (such as ether) to the patient during surgery. The anaesthetic was delivered via a tube into the trachea (windpipe). It was designed by the English physician Sir Francis E. Shipway (1875-1968) who was a leading anaesthesia specialist.
