On the other hand, borings taken along the riverfront over all other portions of the territory near the loadcenter of the electric traction system showed either a greatdepth of silt or other unfavorable conditions. At Port Morris a concrete bulkhead, built along one sideand the outer end of the building to form a slip and dock, wasused as a portion of a cofferdam for the excavation of thefoundation. An existing embankment over a sewer formsone wing to reach the shore and a timber cofferdam forms theother. An intercepting ditch on the land side caught the waterwhich drained in from a swamp, and this, together with theseepage through the cofferdam, was easily disposed of withpumps. Excavation was made to rock over the entire area coveredby the buildings. In some places the rock was disintegrated. YONKERS POWER STATION OF THE NEW YORK CENTRAL & HUDSON RIVER RAILROAD located about 40 ft. distant from the main power design of these power stations is such as to secureeconomy in space for the power generated, as the number ofcubic feet per kilowatt capacity is only 102. The number ofsquare feet of building per kilowatt is LOCATION The locations adopted for the two power stations, besidesbeing near the load centers of the electric traction system, areadvantageous because they are on the water front and are alsoadjacent to existing tracks. They are thus convenient of ac-cess for delivery of coal by boat or car. FOUNDATIONS At Port Morris the solid rock is sufficiently near the surface to warrant carrying the concrete foundation down to it, and at Yonkers a bed of hard sand and gravel forms a good bottom for a pile and concrete foundation on the particular location and in others it was extremely hard. The surface also wasvery irregular
