Disused slate quarry on the island of Easdale south of Oban in Scotland
Editorial use only. The small island of Easdale on the west coast of Scotland south of Oban was once a thriving slate extraction area with its own harbour. Puffers and other vessels would call to freight away the considerable output of quality slate. The first records indicate that slate was extracted in 1544. Production took off in the 18th century and was only curtailed after a disastrous storm with a tidal wave swamped the quarries as can be seen here. Production never recovered after the first World War when many young men failed to return and other forms of roof coverings were introduced
