In the late afternoon sun, a township man walks his cows home from grazing land on the edge of the township. Such animals may wander at night into the central areas of Grahamstown, where they risk being impounded for a few rands recovery. The well designed houses behind the grassy area over which the man is walking are privately improved: brick built, with tiled roofs and possibly belonging to young professionals.
