Flowers some bisexual, some female; those of both kinds upon one plant.—Bisexualfiower with the calyx inferior, and 5 sepals. Stamens 5, hypogynous. Anthers with round lobes. — Female flower with the calyx inferior, deeply divided into two large, flat, equal or nearly equal, lobes. Ovary compressed. Fruit a utricle, invested by the calyx, which is now enlarged. {G. Don.) Leaves simple, alternate or opposite, stipulate, sub-evergreen ; undivided or jagged, bearing a meal-like scurf.
