OSEPH ALLEINE was born atDevizes, early in the year 1634.* Thedate of his birthday is lost, but hisbaptism, according to the register of Church, was on the 8th of April. He wasthe fourth child in the family, and after him wereseveral others, including some whose names arenot recorded, f * Late in the year 1633, if we reckon by the old style, whichsupposed the year to begin on the 25th of March, and end on the24th of March following. f The following are the names of Mr. Alleines children, withthe dates of their baptism as given in the register:—Edward, 13th. Hugh Miller used to complain that withmost persons the word Cf schools only called tomind the idea of certain buildings devoted toscholastic purposes, and that the word cc school-masters only suggested the idea of certain men indesks, teaching in those buildings. He thoughtthis was too narrow a meaning for such words, andthat its adoption led to too narrow a view ofeducation. Regarding the matured life of a man inthe light of a result; in his opinion, every scene,every event, and every friendship of childhoodcontributing to that result, should be rememberedin the list of our cc schools and , therefore, was the title he selected for thecharming story of his own life.
