Light micrograph of a fetal ovary showing several oocytes (immature egg cells) undergoing meiosis (gamete formation). The oocytes are in the leptotene stage of prophase I. In this stage individual chromosomes form visible thin strands within the nucleus. These strands show small granules called chromomeres.
