He explains the name Healaugh as meaning thedomain subject to the jurisdiction of Heiu, and adds that it is notimprobable that the chapel, to the north-east of which there are ex-tensive remains as well as the priory, stands on the sites of earlierbuildings of St. Heius monastery. In the course of digging avault in the cemetery at Healaugh many years ago, a brokentombstone was found six feet below the surface. The design isvery peculiar, consisting of a composition of circles, all scratchedslightly with a compass and a cross roughly formed by triplelines.
