Those in the trade, both wholesale and retail, are keenly con- scious that Lent has come. About the only flurry in the market was a slight improvement in the demand for violets and for red roses and carnations for St. Valentine's day, but the volume of business even in these was not sufficient to give tone to an otherwise dull and lifeless market. The weakness in Beau- ties reported in last week's market let- ter has rather increased than otherwise. Specials range from 40 to 60 cents, with few sales at the higher figure. Killarneys, Maids, Brides and Bichmonds hold their own better than Beauties, the range of 6 to 8 cents for specials being fairly well maintained. Carnations continue to come to hand freely and sell at from 75 cents to $3 per hundred, according to variety and quality. Few bring more than $2 and the bulk of the sales ar
