The Brough of Birsay (in the background of the image) can only be accessed on foot at low tide, Although the Brough of Birsay settlement was previously occupied by the Picts in the 7th century, the visible Viking settlement foundations date from the 9th century. The site is now managed by Historic Scotland and is open to visitors at specified times.
