Theages of the high school pupils ranged from fourteen tosixteen years. In the instructors opinion the boys best fitted tobenefit from this shop and best fitted for productivework are those of the first and second years of the highschool, that is, the oldest boys commonly available under. The instructors policy as to sequence of tool work is asfollows: bench work for a week or two (not much benchwork is available in the common run of repairs), drillpress for two months if possible, shaper for four plan is sometimes impracticable because there arenot enough tools. Following the above comes threemonths work on the lathe. Ordinarily, students do notreach the milling machine before the fourth term, and,as the average stay in the shop is three terms, only afew come into contact with this tool. Observation brings out very clearly the fact that inthis shop, constantly faced as it is with the exactingrequirements of production or repair work, the instruc-tors whole time and energy are taken up with startingand guiding his boys on particular jobs.
