Headstone to John Jones, d. 1865, St Mary's church, Gwaenysgor, Wales, 1865 headstone in Welsh to John Jones just to east side of south path to porch. Inscription reads: YMA / y claddwyd / John Jones genedigol / o blwyf Llancadwaladr / yr hwn a fufarw y 26 ain / o Orphenaf 1865 yn 60 ain: oed / Buyn was ffyddloni Beriglor / y Plwyfhwnam 15 mlynedd / Crist yn fywyd_ Marw yn elw / Phil. 1,21. Note the spelling of Orphenaf opposed to the modern Gorffennaf. Soft mutation causes initial /ɡ/ to be deleted. English translation; "Here / is buried / John Jones native / of the parish Llancadwaladr / and who died 26th / of July 1865 aged 60 yrs old. / He was a faithful servent of the incumbant / of this parish for 15 yrs. / For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain. Paul's Epistle to the Philippians. 1;21. St Mary Magdalene's churchyard is managed as sanctuary for wildlife, some areas left uncut till flowers & seeds are over to provide food & shelter for insects & birds, while cut grass raked into ‘wildlife piles’.
