Whena young man he removed with hisparents to Cambridge, Guernsey Co., Ohio, whereyoung Briggs engaged in the work of establishingstage lines. lie also here embarked in politicalaffairs and as a Whig run for the office of CountyAuditor but was defeated by John Ferguson, aJackson Democrat. After remaining in Ohio for six years, the glow-ing accounts of the fair fields and the fertile prairiesof the Territory of Iowa, led him westward acrossthe Father of Waters.
