Theboyhood of our subject waspassed in his native State, and in atTtendance upon the common schoolshe received a fair education whichwas subsequently improved by aterm at Norwich Academy. Whena young man he removed with hisparents to Cambridge, Guernsey Co., Ohio, whereyoung Briggs engaged in the work of establishingstage lines. lie also here embarked in politicalaffairs and as a Whig run for the office of CountyAuditor but was defeated by John Ferguson, aJackson Democrat. After remaining in Ohio for six years, the glow-ing accounts of the fair fields and the fertile prairiesof the Territory of Iowa, led him westward acrossthe Father of Waters.
