Always found interference effects in light highly entertaining, but it also seemed disappointing that obvious visual effects due to interference are so rare. Shadow Curtains is the second iteration of my earlier Shadow Curtain and features two curtains with a continuous printed image. Starting with the idea that simulations can often be more compelling and impactful than the real, Shadow Curtains simulate shadows of lush foliage emerging through warm sunlight from an imagined window or terrace. Shadows are conditional to their context, such as environment, light source, time of day, variety and placement of obstructions, etc. This ephemeral condition is made permanent in the form of a curtain; a product that can be situated where no such condition of light and shadow would otherwise exist. Shadows, themselves projected simulations, are here simulated once more. An image of actual foliage would be unconvincing and certainly acknowledged as fake, but an image of a shadow can still hold true; copies can be recopied without losing efficacy. Because of all the sun that is shining through our windows, I decided to hang some white curtains in front of the sliding doors that leads out to our terrace, so we can protect the furniture inside. But as you can see, I still haven´t ironed the curtains or cut them in the right length, as I´m not sure if this is the right solution for these windows… At first I liked the “hotel-feeling look” they gave to the living room, but I don´t like shutting the view out, so I´m thinking maybe transparent roller blinds ( like this ) would be a better idea? That way I can take them only halfway down on sunny days. I also like the modern and clean look that roller blinds give.
