G. and B. S., with thedate 1746, and the house on the righthand is dated 1749. Prolmbly the risingof 1745 left an impression of insecurity HOUSES IN BANFF 83 FOURTH PERIOD on the minds of the builders, causing them to fall back on the old planof house building with a strong wall of defence, having one protectedgateway only opening to the outside.
