Artificial insemination (image 7 of 9). Woman holds a semen sample during analysis before its use in artificial insemination. This process is used when a couple cannot conceive naturally. The semen is analysed to ensure the health and motility of the sperm cells, which are then injected into the woman's cervix. When this process is used by a couple, it is known as AIH (artificial insemination by husband's, or life partner's, semen). There is around a 65% chance of fertilisation over six months of treatment. Photographed at a clinic in Milan, Italy. For a sequence showing stages in the process, see images M802/154-162.
