Forest dung beetle walking in a forest
The forest dung beetle is the lesser brother of the dor or dung beetle (Geotrupes stercorarius). With the decline of farming, dor beetles together with cowpats have become very few in pastures. In forests it is still possible to meet its smaller relative, the forest dung beetle. Beetles living in the soil are all dark – some jet black. The forest dung beetles, at least larger individuals, are a few centimetres long, and have strong legs with spines – for work in soil good tools are necessary. Note the antennae or feelers of the forest dung beetle, they have fans at the tips.
