The proton microprobe system is able to measure ele- ments at levels approaching a few parts per million, with the further advantage of a data acquisition system that permits quantitative mapping with full-spectrum pro- cessing at every pixel in the image. Materials and Methods Stutolith collection and preparation Statoliths of chokka squid (Loligo vulgaris rcynaiidii) were collected during several summer cruises of RS Afri- cana, RS Algoa, and various commercial vessels in the years 1992-1994. The area of collection (Fig. 1) extended from St. Helena Bay on the west coast of South Africa to Port Alfred on the southeast coast. The list of collected material is given in Table I. The thr
