The proton microprobe system is able to measure ele- ments at levels approaching a few parts per million, with the further advantage of a data acquisition system that permits quantitative mapping with full-spectrum pro- cessing at every pixel in the image. Materials and Methods Stutolith collection and preparation Statoliths of chokka squid (Loligo vulgaris rcynaiidii) were collected during several summer cruises of RS Afri- cana, RS Algoa, and various commercial vessels in the years 1992-1994.
