Foetuses and DNA. Conceptual artwork of unborn human babies (foetuses) and a strand of the genetic material, DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). The different atoms of the DNA are represented by differently coloured spheres. The atoms are colour coded: carbon (cyan), nitrogen (yellow), phosphorus (purple) and oxygen (dark blue). This image could represent genetic engineering, or the mapping of human genes known as the human genome project. DNA controls the development and functioning of the cells in the human body. Everybody's DNA varies slightly and it is this which gives humans individual characteristics.
