Dinofelis barlowi. Illustration and photo-reconstruction of the African sabre-toothed cat Dinofelis barlowi walking through the savannah after a successful hunt. Dinofelis is a genus of sabre-toothed cats belonging to the tribe Metailurini. They were widespread in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America at least 5 million to about million years ago (Early Pliocene to Early Pleistocene). In size Dinofelis was between a modern leopard and a lion, most being about the size of a jaguar (70 centimetres tall and up to 120 kilograms). They were medium-sized, but powerful cats that possessed two prominent sabre teeth.
