Legend has it that in 1620 a mule train camped outside the city found an extra mule that refused to move and on prodding rolled on its side and died. A pack that it was carrying contained a statue of the Virgen de la Soledad, so the people of Oaxaca built a shrine, then a church and finally the basilica that stands today, on the spot where the statue was found. The virgin of solitude is the patron saint of Oaxaca.
