In the shoe business he workeddiligently until he had saved one hundred dol-lars, when he began fitting himself for theposition of a teacher, studying at a privateschool in Lee, He subsequently taughtschool winters in the towns of Lee, Madbury,Rochester, and Barrington, this State, andWest Newbury, Mass., for fifteen years, andworked at farming in the summers, making hishome in Lee, where he was one of the boardfor examining teachers. During this timeMr. Durgin held different local public 1871 and 1872 he served in the State legis-lature; and in 1874, having been appointed.
