The beach is gravelly or even consist- ing of shingle for a distance until Moss Beach, where it is sandy. The recent drift sand has accumulated into small dunes some dis- tance from the shore (Fig. 10), leaving a belt of older consolidated sand bare or covered with a dense carpet of various plants. Further inland the dunes grow in size and finally, about km. from the ocean, they reach quite a considerable height.
