Statue of Karl I Emperor of Austria in the grounds of the Tiroler Folks Museum at Bergisel in Innsbruck
This and other images are of the Tiroler Folks Museum at Bergisel in the suburbs of Innsbruck. The significance of this site is where Andreas Hofer led his Tirolean Militia Army against the combined armies of France, and Bavaria during the Napoleonic war of 1810. One hundred years later it was a favourite place of Emporer-Kaiser Franz Josef up until his death in 1916 due to old age and the ravages of the First World War that saw his beloved Habsburg Dynasty collapse and his country disintegrate. Memorial to Kaiser Karl who inherited the Habsburg throne on the death of his grand uncle and who was Franz Josefs representative of Austria's interests during the First World War. Karl tried unsuccessfully to sue for peace with England and France in 1917 but was thwarted in his efforts by the Germans and Kaiser Wilhelm. After the war Karl was exiled first to Switzerland, then later to Madeira where he died in 1922 of pneumonia.
