Unemployed Gerri Spiers resorted to using a sandwich board to advertise her skills as she seeks employment. Having hand delivered over a thousand job applications with an approximately 10% response rate, she plans to stand outside various London Tube stations. As a mature job seeker, she claims that it is more difficult to find work. Her text below: Extra, Extra, Read all About it! I made a sandwich board to try to get a job! Job hunting these days is a full time job! Especially in my case being the ‘mature’ job seeker. In my plight to land a job I am trying alternative methods to secure employment. Over the last few weeks I have hand delivered over 1000 letters to London offices, which stated that I am seeking work. I planned the route along the Jubilee and Central Lines and took around 200 letters each day. I asked receptionists to hand the letters over to HR or popped them in to letter boxes if the office was closed. It was a great feeling coming back empty handed and I only posted them to companies I felt could use my service. Around 10% so far have replied with a few requesting my CV. At present this has not lead to any actual job interviews. I have spent a considerable time over the last few months seeking a job via recruitment job sites on the internet (with daytime tv for company!) which do not seem to result in many opportunities and in fact, only achieved around 1% response success rate if that! I then had a brain wave – which is my current campaign to find a job. Why not make a ‘work wanted’ sandwich board sign and walk round London! So I have had my poster professionally printed and plastic coated in case of rain (good old UK weather!) and will be promoting myself on Friday 16th May at London Bridge. I wondered if the media could help me in my hour of need? If you feel you could assist in my job search, would you be willing to feature my ‘work wanted sign’ in your newspaper? MS G SPIERS
