Insecticide research. Researcher examining a breeding tube containing red flour beetles (ribolium castaneum, red) and their larvae (yellow). The beetles are bred in a mixture of flour and yeast. These beetles are a pest of stored grain and grain products, causing large economic losses. They can quickly become resistant to insecticides. This research is studying the development, physiology and genetics of this beetle, in an attempt to develop more effective insecticides and control methods. Photographed at the University of Newcastle, UK.
