Before firing, the Indians de-manded a surrender of the house. They were answeredby a volley of musketry. The attack and defencewere maintained till night, when the assailants at-tempted to fire the house. One of them, crawlingwith a brand toward the kitchen, was driven awayby a shot from a black man. At this moment a smallboat, loaded with cannon-balls, and steered by oneman, approached the fort. The savages poured fortha volley of balls against him, and rushed to seize theboat. With acannon they could now have battered house and fortto pieces; and aware of this, they procured a hollowlog, twisted chains around it, and rammed in a heavycharge. This ingenious piece of ordnance blew intoa thousand pieces with the first discharge, killingseveral, wounding more, and throwing the survivorsinto a state of mingled terror and astonishment. In a little time they renewed the assault on thehouse, but were driven back.
