Caledonian ancient old tree, ancient wide-crowned 'granny' pine in Scottish highlands or glen in Braemar, Royal Deeside, Cairngorms National Pa
Caledonian Pine woodland once covered vast areas of Scotland but now it is reduced to less than 1% of its former extent . This will be wonderful habitat for capercaillie, an iconic Scottish bird, which is now critically endangered. But not everyone is happy to see trees expanding over heather moor, an important habitat in itself and economically important for grouse shooting.
