Troughton transit circle. This instrument was made in 1793 by the British instrument maker Edward Troughton (1753-1835). The instrument was owned by a succession of astronomers, including British astronomer John Lee (1783-1866) after whom it is sometimes named. It is now held at the Royal Astronomical Society. Artwork from 'Handbook of Descriptive and Practical Astronomy' (George Frederick Chambers, 1890 fourth edition).
