MR. HUGHES APPROVES THE EPISCOPAL SYSTEM. I personally see no insuperable objection what-ever to some such compromise as was suggested to usthis morning ; certainly there is no objection to theLitany, and I believe in the statement of episcopacyas found in Bishop Lightfoots famous essay. As faras I know episcopacy existed in the Christian Church at least from the time of the Apostle john; and Ihave not the least doubt, from a careful study of thisparticular question, that the episcopal system is muchmore effectual for aggressive purposes than any authority of some representative minister, dulyand properly chosen, who has the right of initiative,is of immense advantage in carrying on a war intothe enemys country, and I believe in the principlewhich was wittily expressed in the words: If the. REV. HUGH PRICE HUGHES, IN ALPINE COSTUME. ark had been built by a committee it would not havebeen finished yet. I believe in a committee to keepthe individual in his place ; but I also believe that allhistory teaches us that you must have individualinitiative for the great aggressive works whether ofChurch or State. While stating all this I must begpermission to express my intense repudiation of thetheor5^ which I do not sujopose Mr, Aitken holds, butwhich many saintly and conscientious men hold, thatthe existence of bishops as such is necessary to theexistence of the Church. I am bound to sav that, LEADING AKTICLES OF THE MONTH, 45r, lest my position should be inisuiiderstood. Havingsaid that, I have no personal objection to episcopacy. AN ENGLISH WESLEYAN SISTERHOOD.
