ACUTE OTITIS, ILLUSTRATION
Acute otitis. This illustration shows the inflammation of the middle ear and the mucosa behind the eardrum occurring during acute otitis. The subject experiences violent pain and fever. Acute otitis results from a bacterial infection, often in young children. An initially pharyngeal infection spreads to the ear via the Eustachean tube. Antibiotics are given for infectious otitis.
