It took the field first, and met in national convention, atPhiladelphia, Feb. 22, 1856. There were 227 delegates the States were represented except Maine, Vermont, Georgia,and South Carolina. Many of the delegates (probably a fourth)were not so much Americans as anti-slavery men. MillardFillmore, New York, was nominated for President, and AndrewJ. Donelson, Tennessee, for Vice-President. The platform an-nounced: (i) Perpetuation of the Union. (2) Preference ofnative-born citizens for office. (3) No office for any one whorecognizes obligation to any foreign prince, potentate, or power.(4) Non-interference by Congress with questions belonging toindividual States, nor by States with each other.
