An old engraving of workers using a ‘shank’ in a metal foundry. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. A shank (bull ladle) is a device for carrying molten iron or other metals. It is carried from the furnace by two workers holding handles at each end of a cross-bar (crutch). This could be tipped to pour the molten metal. This large version also requires the assistance of a crane.
