The 3500-6000 men of Argentinian General San Martin's Army of the Andes assembled at Mendoza,, Argentina, before a 25 day Andean crossing via the Uspallata Pass to free Chile,and ultimately Peru, from Spanish Colonial Rule in 1817. This monument, at the Artists' Gate entrance to Central Park South, shows him pointing to the next frontier in the battle for liberation. The monument, unveiled in 1951, was a gift from Buenos Aires to New York City.
