Blood sampling. Technician taking a sample from a bag of blood donated by a volunteer. Samples are usually taken to be screened for blood diseases, such as hepatitis and HIV, or to carry out research on diseases and disorders. Donor blood is given to patients in transfusions to replace lost blood, for example during surgery or after accidents. It is essential that this blood is clean and that it is of the same blood type as the patient. Photographed at the Sanquin blood bank in the Netherlands.
