Exotic tropical flora. Close up of a Blue Passion Flower blooming in an English garden. Passiflora caerulea. England, United Kingdom.

The Passion Flower is native to tropical South America. When first seen by early missionaries the large exotic flowers seemed to have for them a religious significance, suggesting the Passion of Christ on the cross. The three prominent stigmata looked like the nails which pierced Jesus’ hands and feet, the Corona resembled a halo or a crown of thorns and the ten petals symbolised the ten apostles who were present at the crucifixion (Peter and Judas being absent).
