Historical cosmologies. Historical artwork of the various historical cosmological models proposed to explain planetary movements. The main diagram is a heliocentric (Sun-centred) model of the then six known planets, their satellites and other heavenly bodies orbiting the Sun. From the 2nd century the dominant model had been the geocentric (Earth- centred) Ptolemaic system (upper left). This was overthrown by the heliocentric Copernican model of 1543 (lower right). An Egyptian model (lower left) and Tychonic model (upper right) attempted to keep a stationary Earth at the centre of the universe. Details of planetary orbits are at left and right.
