He resigned this position in1877 to resume the practice of his profession in theEast. He was a member of the American Instituteof Homoeopathy. On June 17, 1856, he was mar-ried to Sallie Levick of Philadelphia. He died inCalifornia, June 19, 1S99. JONATHAN TAFT was born at Russellville,Brown County, Ohio, September 17, 1820, son ofLyman and Hannah (VVaite) Taft. He had theadvantages of a common school education up to the. JONATHAN TAFT age of fourteen, after which he attended an academyfor two years. In 1841 he began the study of den-tistry with Dr. George D. Tetor, of Ripley, Ohio,and was graduated from the Ohio College of DentalSurgery in 1850. He practised his profession atRipley for some years, and then removed to Cincin-nati. He was a member of the Ohio Dental CollegeAssociation from its organization in 1852. He alsobecame a member of the American Society of DentalSurgeons in 1S52. He assisted in organizing theAmerican Dental Association in 1S59, and was itssecretary until 1868, when he was chosen president 252 UNIFERSnT OF MICHIGAN of the Association. He was also a member of theAmerican Medical Association, and of the Inter-national Medical Congress. In 1S93 he representedthe State of Ohio as a memljer of the ExecutiveCommittee of the Worlds Columbian Dental Con-gress at Chicago.
