THE SOLDIER MAGAZINE IN HAMBURG - The pigment paper is then taken to the ethers, where it is placed on a specially prepared copper cylinder. It is stretched first by hand and then rolled on. Whilst it is being rolled, hot water is poured over it which makes the pigment adhere to the copper surface, the paper back is then washed off. Etching the cylinder is a very tricky job and is carried out by hand. A weak solution of acid is poured over the cylinder as it rotates and by several applications, it is etched to the required depth. , British Army of the Rhine
