Witherite crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of crystals of witherite, or barium carbonate. These crystals have been grown in the presence of block copolymers, blocks of different polymerised monomers, leading to the formation of different crystals structures. Two crystal types are seen here (brown and green). Witherite is a rare mineral found in low temperature mineral veins, often associated with the lead ore galena. Magnification: x1160 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
