OF BORSO D'ESTE.

The statue of Borso is located next to the Volto del Cavallo, on the left. As for the equestrian statue, this too was entrusted to Nicolò Baroncelli; after the final touches, the statue was inaugurated in 1454. In 1456 the four shield-holding geniuses with the Estensi coats of arms were added by Domenico di Paris. Initially the statue was placed in front of the mayor's residence, to the right of the Palazzo della Ragione. When Borso died in 1472, it was moved with its column to the statue of his father, where we still see it today. In the eighteenth century a fire caused serious damage to the column. In 1796 the two statues were thrown to the ground and reduced to pieces to steal the bronze; it was a century and a half after that, thanks to a sculptor from Piacenza, a certain Giacomo Zilocchi (1862-1943) who, through the drawings, reconstructed the two fifteenth-century statues. In 1927 they returned to their pedestals to occupy their proper place.
