There is Chepstow Castle with its Early Normangateway spanned by a circular arch flanked by round OLD CASTLES 129 towers. In the inner court there are gardens and ruinsof a grand hall, and in the outer the remains of a chapelwith evidences of beautifully groined vaulting, and alsoa winding staircase leading to the battlements. In thedungeon of the old keep at the south-east corner of theinner court Roger de Britolio, Earl of Hereford, wasimprisoned for rebellion against the Conqueror, and inlater times Henry Martin, the regicide, lingered as aprisoner for thirty years, employing his enforced leisurein writing a book in order to prove that it is not r
