Greatest number of American fighting men yet brought to port on one ship, the Leviathan, tied up at Pier 4, Hoboken, NJ. The ship carried 9,470 troops, mostly African Americans, including the 371st and 372nd Infantry Regiments, part of the 368th regiment, and 2,132 sick and wounded. The 371st and 372nd were awarded the Croix de Guerre and were brigaded with the French. The photo shows the Leviathan entering New York Harbor, taken from the police boat "Patrol."
